Prepare a Shed Foundation

Before putting your shed together you need to ensure that you have a strong, level foundation to put it on. With smaller sheds if you have a hard flat area, such as a well laid patio you may get away with putting it straight onto that. But by and large it is better to prepare a specific proper foundation. The traditional method is a concrete or paving slab base. If you are using concrete then prepare it several days before constructing the shed so that it dries out properly.

The use of specifically designed interlocking plastic bases is becoming increasingly popular for shed bases.

Check the Weather Forecast

Don’t start building if you are going to be interrupted with heavy rain. Alternatively you may want to avoid full sun on a summers day.

Get Some Help

The pieces can often be heavy for one person to deal with and screwing bits into position is much easier with someone else holding it still.

Also you will have someone to raise a drink with afterwards when the job is successfully completed!

Get Together the Correct Tools for the Job.

Having everything to hand before you start building the shed will make the job much simpler. Also its a good idea if you have them to look out some extra screws, as there never seems to be enough supplied. Also don’t forget the spirit level, you should check each piece before fixing it firmly to ensure the build is coming together properly.

Always Read the Instructions

This is a tough one as you just want to dive in. But it does really help.

Unpack the Shed Pieces and Label Up

Check off each piece of the shed and fixing against the instructions and label them up. Labels or marks are good as some of the pieces especially of the frame look very similar but differ crucially in size.

If you have the space then it helps to lay them out on the ground in the correct build orientation.

Usually; walls, roof, floor, door and windows if your shed has them.
