What's so great about Kamado Grills?

Kamado Grills are ceramic egg-shaped barbecue grills. Kamado is the Japanese word for “stove” or “cooking range”.  Their versatility and ease of use is bringing them to the attention of more and more outdoor cooks. With a Kamado grill you can grill, smoke, roast all sorts of foods together or separately.

 

They feature very thick walled, heat resistant ceramic shells that retain heat exceptionally well resulting in food being cooked very  evenly. Their thick outer shells also means they are very efficient and use much less fuel than other BBQ grills.

What are the uses for a Kamado Grill? 

 

Kamado Grills are traditionally designed to steam rice. However the design of them makes them very flexible and they are great for grilling and smoking. Flat-breads such as pizza, can also be cooked on them on a flat ceramic or stone tray (pizza stone). They benefit from a system of vents which allow control of airflow and therefore temperature, making them like wood fired ovens and meaning that they can be used for roasting and baking.

Are Kamado Grills Smokers?

 
Kamados  are not just smokers, but the insulative properties of the double wall shells made from ceramics, terracotta or steel, means that they  are great smokers in terms of both cooking power and fuel efficiency. They can be left for up to 18 hours on a small amount of charcoal and longer with more charcoal.

Is a Kamado Grill better than a Gas BBQ?

 

There are many pros for a Kamado Grill in comparison to a standard gas BBQ. One is temperature; a Kamado can maintain consistent temperatures of up to 700 degrees, whereas your typical backyard gas grill only reaches the 500 F range. The higher temperature range of the Kamado makes it great for that perfect sear on your steak. 

Also Kamado Grills, as there is less to go wrong, can last a lifetime as opposed to the usual 10 years from a gas grill.

What Fuel do you use in a Kamado Grill?

 
Wood chunks are best, although charcoal briquettes will work but they are not the best fuel source for a Kamado Grill. Both wood chips and wood chunks work well in a Kamado Grill but each should be treated differently. Wood chips as they are small, tend to burn too quickly. You should soak them in water first to get that slower smoky burn going.
